Golden Twenties for Christmas

The two portraits from our 1920s photoshoot were a Christmas gift for the parents of our guest model Ian; this is why Joanna had to hold back with publishing this post until today. And while we're on the subject, merry Christmas everyone!

We've taken the photos at Magdalen College in Oxford.

A skoro jesteśmy w temacie gwiazdkowym, to składamy wszystkim najlepsze życzenia świąteczne!

Zdjęcia zrobiliśmy w koledżu Magdalen w Oksfordzie.

Uwaga, ta stylizacja bierze udział w rocznicowym konkursie FOCHOCIUCHÓW - warto zajrzeć i wziąć udział, bo stawką jest piękna torebka vintage.

Joanna is wearing:
- A dress from New Look (second hand, of course)
- Mum's pearls
- Same Shoes And Gloves As Always
- A headband from H&M, with a bonus flower.

Ian is wearing his regular black tie outfit, and is very skeptical about Joanna's bow-tying abilities. Judge for yourselves.

Little Black Birthday Dress (II)

Supposedly every elegant woman should have a few staple fashion essentials (the LBD, denim jeans, a trench coat, a cashmere cardigan, a classic white shirt...). Joanna doesn’t own any of the above. Instead, she cheats by using her personal fashion essentials, i.e. black tops (don’t ask how many she has...) and black skirts. This way she can have quite a few LBDs, each of different length, cut and character.

The photos were taken in our favourite Summertown Wine Cafe and we tried to give them a familiar 1960s touch.

Joanna is wearing:
- a top and a skirt from a charity shop (ha - got ya! not a true LBD!)
- Ryłko pumps
- a bow belt (Primani)
- pearl earrings (mum's)

Little Black Birthday Dress (I)

It's Joanna's birthday for another 30 mins (GMT)! Here's a teaser of a shoot that will be up when times are less busy.

Too long a break

Adrian's partying in Spain, and Joanna feels like posting something - so here's a silly recycled picture from a while back.
Sorry for the break, we'll have a photo shoot soon!

A red hat for a rainy day...

We're back to colour! We needed to get away from the gloomy Oxford autumn, and Joanna's new Red Hat came to the rescue. The Red Hat has nothing to do with Linux distribution or having fun over 50 (not yet, anyway) - but it's still very good at cheering up.
We were shooting at the bar of the Oxford Thames Four Pillars Hotel; a big thank you goes to their wonderfully understanding staff, who unfortunately were too shy to participate in the shoot.

Wracamy do kolorów!

Joanna is wearing:
- a hat (Aryton)
- gloves (Reserved)
- a top from high school days (sorry mum, I know you hate it - but the colour is so pretty!)
- a skirt from a charity shop
- shoes (charity shop, originally Clarks)
- a belt (been around for years)
- hold-ups - not real nylons, like Wanilianna's, Pinupcandy's or Natalia's, but at least they're stockings :)

Before 1917

We're going back in time even further now, taking advantage of the gardens at Tubney House, the stabilisation work on a listed greenhouse and Joanna's newest vintage hat. Do you like it?

Cofamy się w czasie jeszcze bardziej, wykorzystując ogrody Tubney House, prace stabilizacyjne w zabytkowej szklarni i najnowszy kapelusik Joanny. Podoba Wam się?

Joanna is wearing:
- a vintage hat (second-hand shop)
- vintage leather gloves (Gloucester Green market)
- second-hand blouse (Gloucester Green market)
- skirt bought for her high school final exams
- shoes inherited from her grandma
- a parasol from Bangkok's Chatuchak market.

Retro-Chicken

For reasons I could not understand Joanna wanted to arrange a photo session with chickens she raises next to the Department of Zoology where she works. It rained terribly that day and it certainly did not make me more enthusiastic either. But oh well, what won't you do for women?
I like the effect though. Do you?
Please do not ask what she is wearing. I do not know anything more than you can see, but I am sure Joanna will update the post when she returns.
Speaking of me, I use an excellent Pentax K10D (it's weather proof!)

A Wam?

Joanna's P. S.:

I'm wearing a second-hand dress, mum's old scarf and an H&M cardigan. So nothing special, really.

The Little Prince

Ever since the fairy tale theme came about, Adrian wanted to photograph the Little Prince. With a bit of help from Kasia, here he is.

Oto on, stworzony przy pomocy Kasi.

Adrian ma na sobie:
- Zielone spodenki Kasi (no name)
- Czerwony szlafrok Kasi z Primarku
- T-shirt Pierre Cardin
- No i szalik, ktory jest, emm, zasłonką, i normalnie wisi w pokoju

Originally Adrian wanted to use his own planet, but ended up with this moon downloaded from the internet which was taken by a 0.9m telescope.

Fairy tales revisited: The Rose and the Ring

Angelica and Giglio, drawn by the Author

Now Angelica little knew that the ring which Giglio had given her was a fairy ring: if a man wore it, it made all the women in love with him; if a woman, all the gentlemen.

- William Makepeace Thackeray, "The Rose and the Ring"

"The Rose and the Ring" was one of Joanna's favourite childhood stories. As a continuation of the fairy tale theme, we have put together a few photographs with this book in mind. Thanks go to Tucker for his negotiation skills.

Joanna wspomina "Pierścień i różę" jako jedną z ukochanych historyjek dzieciństwa. Kontynuując motyw bajkowy wrzucamy kilka zdjęć inspirowanych właśnie tą książką. Dziękujemy Tuckerowi za jego zdolności negocjacyjne.

Joanna - Prince Giglio (Książę Lulejka) is dressed in:
- a shirt bought at Camden Market
- a vest bought in a charity shop (apparently it was brought in by a lovely Canadian woman)
- leggings - Next clearance
- wellies from a vintage shop
The Enchanted Rose is a gift from Joanna's mother.

Joanna - Princess Angelica (Księżniczka Angelika) is wearing:
- a blouse bought at Gloucester Green market
- the Prince's vest
- a skirt from a second-hand store in Gdańsk
- a crown (in fact a necklace) from Oxford's Covered Market
- a ring bought at AMBERIF: International Fair of Amber, Jewellery and Gemstones

BONUS Tak w oryginale miał na imię Kapitan Zerwiłebski:

Mary Poppins

This is our tribute to Mary Poppins: the real, stern, P. L. Travers Mary Poppins, not the nauseatingly sweet, technicolour Disney cyborg. Even though Joanna greatly admires Julie Andrews as an actress, she hates the Mary Poppins film as much as Pamela Lyndon Travers herself did. It's just not about Mary!
Adrian is staying out of the book vs. movie debate, preferring to observe Joanna's unrest at a safe distance, ideally hidden behind a camera lens.

Fun fact: P. L. Travers was Australian. Did you know?

Akcja szafiarska: dzień postaci z bajek, cz. I

Ciekawostka: P. L. Travers pochodziła z Australii. Wiedzieliście o tym?

Joanna's Mary is wearing a:
Coat - from Żana
Hat - from a vintage shop in Glasgow
Shoes - Clark's, bought in a charity shop
Bag - from Solar
Pashmina - a gift
Skirt - no name, charity shop

Coffee and wine

Since Oxford is still stubbornly rainy, we chose to have an indoor session with a slightly nostalgic, 60-ish feel to it. We took the photos at the Summertown Wine Cafe with the assistance of Adrian's very patient father.

When it was colder...

Because we are currently in two different countries (Adrian frolicking in Poland, Joanna working hard in the UK), which means that arranging photo shoots is somewhat difficult, we have decided to dig up and recycle some older pictures in lieu. These were taken in New College gardens, when the temperature was a bit lower than now.

Unfortunately Joanna's lovely 30-s style cloche hat was stolen this March, from Nuffield College. If anyone has seen a Suspicious-Looking Person wearing a similar hat, approach them and question them. Or if you would like to sell such a hat (it's from the H&M autumn 2009 collection), please contact Joanna.

Zrobiliśmy je w ogrodach New College, kiedy temperatura była trochę niższa niż obecnie.

Niestety piękny kapelutek-klosik w stylu lat 30stych ukradzino Joannie w marcu, z Nuffield College.

Joanna is wearing:
- a H&M hat (grrrrrrrrr)
- a Solar scarf
- gloves from Reserved
- a skirt from a charity shop
- a sweater of unidentified origin

Adrian is using Pentax K10D with a Pentax 50mm SMC FA 1.4 lens. He tries to refrain from using strobes, but some pictures received extra fill light. Photographs have been "developed" as monochromes. He tried to simulate using old paper and toners as well as old photo techniques, hence some of them look like ambrotypes. Adrian also applied textures for the extra vintage effect.
Adrian używa aparatu Pentax K10D z obiektywem 50mm SMC FA 1.4. Fotografie zostały "wywołane" w czerni i bieli. Ponadto użył dodatkowych faktur, by nadać im dawniejszy charakter.
